There is perhaps no more iconic modern American novel than The Catcher in the Rye, and it remains an inter-generational favourite. Holden Caulfield is the original outsider, unable to comprehend the angst and alienation he feels about the world and a society he perceives as superficial. Salinger penned several stories with a Caulfield character, but it was only after several short stories that he felt able to create the novel that he would forever be associated with. This edition is from the first year of publication (1951) and is nearly identical to the true first edition, however it is a “book club edition”.
