This year has been perhaps one of the most traumatic and violent years in Black civil rights history.
Systemic racism has torn communities apart and traumatized the communities that have suffered from these injustices for centuries. From Phoenix to New York, Denver to Columbus, Louisville to Albuquerque, the statistical numbers are part of a much larger problem caused by a racialized society that is seemingly determined to justify its unmitigated violence against people of colour.
The fact is, black people are three times more likely to be killed by police than white people.
In 2020 alone, police have killed 831 people, and counting. Black people have been 28% of those killed by police -- despite being only 13% of the population.
What’s more, black people are 1.3 times more likely to be unarmed than white people. [1]
George Floyd. Rayshard Brooks. Breonna Taylor. All were unarmed. Killed in front of their families, children, and communities.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who recall directly experiencing racism suffer psychological trauma and an eroded self-perception even when the experience was as a bystander.
The mission of the National CARES Mentoring Movement is to secure, heal and transform the lives of at-risk Black children by inspiring, recruiting and mobilizing role models from within their communities to mentor and nourish them, and helping them process the unchecked racism that is happening around them.
This year, every gift you give from our holiday collection will in turn be a gift to the National CARES affiliate, Derby City CARES in Louisville, Kentucky, providing them with the funding they need for programs that support, mentor, and provide the psychological well-being these children need in order to survive these times.
So please: shop online at fonfrege.com and join us for this very important cause. Make a change in the lives of our children.
