For Le Corbusier (Charles- Edouard Jeanneret, 1887-1965), architecture constituted a noble art, an exalted calling in which the architect combined plastic invention, intellectual speculation, and higher mathematics to go beyond mere utilitarian needs; even beyond "style," in order to achieve a pure creation of the spirit which established the "emotional relationships by means of raw materials." While today, many disagree with Le Corbusier’s theories on urban planning, he remains a prophet of the "modern" movement in architecture, and creator of some of the twentieth century's most memorable buildings: the Chapel at Ronchamp; the Swiss dormitory at the Cité Universitaire in Paris; and of course, his masterpiece, the Unité d'Habitation in Marseilles.
